Website 101 is an interactive video brought to you with the help of Supmasol Limited. It is aimed at helping companies and individuals understand the intricacies of what makes a website function so that you can make an informative decision when the time comes to get one for your business or brand.

What is a Website?

A website is a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published on at least one web server. eg. martimanhenry.com, supmasol.com google.com, amazon.com, cnn.com etc.

  • Standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP/.NET/Java
  • Content Management Solutions (CMS) - Drag and drop website offered by some hosting providers and made popular by WordPress, Drupal etc.


What does a website need to function?

  • Domain name: This is a unique identifier that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet.
  • Hosting: This is a computer/server (private or from a web hosting provider) that stores your website’s files so that they can be accessed over the internet.
  • Website Files: This includes all the content for the website, i.e, HTML, CSS, javascript, SQL, PHP scripts, media, text and other files that is required by the website.


Which website is right for me?

This is dependent on your budget and the type of business you offer. If you have a big budget and can afford to pay for maintenance you should consider getting a Standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP/.NET/Java website. While if you are strapped for cash you can go with WordPress or other CMS websites.

Pros and Cons

  • CMS websites are easy to manage, quick deployment, low development and maintenance cost.
  • Standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP/.NET/Java websites are more customizable, secured and can easily be transferred to another hosting platform.
  • CMS offer little customization, some are unable to be transferred to other hosting platforms.
  • Standard HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP/.NET/Java websites have a higher start-up and maintenance cost, longer time to develop.
